German
Silver or Brass Gorgets
Either the nnickel (german silver) or brass gorget
pictured with the black twill tape and the two brass buttons. The
widest part across is just over 5.0 inches and the drop/depth
is about 4.5 inches overall.. They were worn by military officers
as part of their uniforms. The last remant of armor. The local
militia sometimes used them as their only mark of rank. These
symbols of rank and esteem were presented to native leaders as
well, and gradually lost their official status and became a standard
trade item. Some were plain while others bore a royal animal
or motif. These gorgets, made from nickel silver (german), follow
the standard and are offered in a plain style. They are authentic
to the Revolutionary War and French & Indian War periods.
